We are happy to announce that our Lobo Reading Pack will go on a field trip on February 23rd. We will be traveling to the movies to see “The Lightning Thief”. This is a well deserved treat for our readers who just completed the book. Pictures will be posted after our trip.
Here is the trailer for “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”. The book by Rick Riordan is our current reading club selection.
This year has been declared the “Year of the Lobo”. In honor of this, our Lobo Reading Pack painted Chinese ornaments to decorate our library for Christmas.

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls
Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls is a companion to The Glass Castle mentioned in my last post. Because it is based on stories her mother told her, it is considered fiction. This is the story of Jeannette’s Grandmother Lily who lived through the Great Depression and raised her children on a ranch in Arizona. I really enjoyed this story because it features another strong woman who refused to set aside her goals to please others. Lily eventually becomes mother to Rose Mary, the free-spirited and sometimes homeless mother of the author. When I read novels like these, it reminds me to be grateful for all the opportunites we have in today’s world.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is a book I just couldn’ t put down. It’s an autobiographical memoir of a young girl growing up in California, West Virginia and everywhere else her parents dragged her to. Jeannette’s parents are eccentric and dirt poor. The book opens as the adult Jeannette looks out of her car while driving to her apartment on Park Avenue. She spots her homeless mother picking through the trash on a street corner. The reader is compelled to keep reading to find out just how the story unfolds to this point. When you read “The Glass Castle” you will be amazed as to how this little girl survived to adulthood.
For my Twilight fans: Here’s a trailer for you to enjoy while you anxiously await the New Moon movie that finally arrives on November 20th.
The Lobo Reading Pack has started it’s new reading selection. The title of the book is “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne. It’s historical fiction; a very different book from our usual fantasy. The setting for the story is Nazi Germany. Our main character is a young boy whose father is a Nazi army officer. Anyone who has not already picked up their books should do so as soon as possible.

We met today during both lunch periods. Unfortunately, the new book we are reading didn’t get here in time. Reading club members still showed up for the meeting and were treated to music while they ate lunch. Alvin Nino, Lopez student was nice enough to play some classical guitar for library patrons. He played several wonderful pieces including “Stairway to Heaven”. Thanks Alvin.
